The Sugar and Molasses Act was passed by Parliament on April 5, 1764. Under the molasses act colonial merchants were required to pay taxes of 6 pence per gallon of foreign molasses. Due to the Corruption, they evaded the taxes and tried to undercut the intention of the tax. Due to this, English product would be cheaper.
